Splendour, sheer splendour!

Splendour, sheer splendour!

It’s just impossible to write anything negative about this exhibition. We have to praise it and praise it to the roof. Even if thinking about fabrics and textiles – tapestries, rugs, carpets, gobelins or mats – instantly puts you off and makes you allergic to dust, you should still conquer your reluctance and visit Zachęta National Gallery of Art.

Textile art has disappeared, which seems to be another good reason to see the potential that lies in fabric. This is a highly educational exhibition, since – when it comes to textile art – it’s really hard to think of anyone else apart from Abakanowicz and the Wawel Arrases.

And yet in Zachęta you will find a plethora of names, including Maria Jarema, Tadeusz Kantor, Władysław Strzemiński, Tadeusz Dominik, Magdalena Abakanowicz (the queen of textiles), Leon Tarasewicz, Zofia Kulik, Jadwiga Sawicka and Monika Dróżyńska, and numerous political, historical and social motifs.
